Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)

At Lucent Dermatology our goal is to provide our patients with state-of-the-art techniques and procedures for beauty enhancement, restoration, and renewal. This is regenerative aesthetics. PRP is a growth factor cocktail using your own natural potential to combat cell aging and tissue atrophy by repairing aging cells and tissues. PRP harnesses the power of your body’s natural healing abilities to promote healing, and regenerate tissues that reduce the signs of aging.

What is platelet rich plasma?

Platelet rich plasma is composed of concentrated platelets suspended in plasma. A small amount of your blood is obtained from a simple blood draw. Your whole blood is centrifuged to separate and concentrate the platelets, growth factors and biological proteins that play an important role in wound healing and stimulate tissue regeneration.

Because it is made from your own blood and injected back into your skin or applied topically during microneedling or laser therapy, there is no risk of adverse reaction, or disease transmission.

PRP therapy for skin rejuvenation can plump fine lines and wrinkles, improve the appearance of acne and other scarring, repair sun damage, improve skin texture, treat dark under-eye circles, and for hair restoration.

How does it work?

Skin rejuvenation

Aging skin is characterized by the loss of skin thickness due to a reduction in collagen which translates into fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin. The proteins and growth factors in platelet rich plasma derived from your own blood can keep your skin looking young and healthy.

Platelet rich plasma works to:

  • activate skin cells to synthesize collagen and elastin which aids in restoration of a youthful appearance and improves the appearance of acne scars.
  • stimulate stem cells to improve cellular regeneration which leads to skin renewal
  • provoke hyaluronic acid production for a radiant complexion
  • enhance blood flow to deliver nutrients that support healing
  • When combined with fractional laser therapy, platelet rich plasma can accelerate healing and rejuvenation. When applied topically it enhances the aesthetic outcome of microneedling.
  • When used with microneedling it is safe and effective to improve skin tone, texture, and strength, soften lines, reduce pore size, and treat other visible signs of aging.

Facial scars

Treating facial scars with platelet rich plasma as an adjunct to laser treatment, microneedling and subcision, a minor surgical procedure used to smooth depressed scars.

Hair loss (Androgenetic Alopecia)

Hair loss is characterized as shortening of the growth phase of hair follicles, and the progressive miniaturization of hair follicles. A condition affecting about 50 million men and 30 million women. In men, hair loss shows as pattern baldness, recession at the front and or thinning at the crown. Women experience hair loss as a general overall enlarging of the part and overall thinning. Hair loss has a significant impact on self-esteem and confidence.

Using platelet rich plasma to treat hair loss has a robust body of evidence to support its use and may be an alternative to transplants and topical medication; or it may be used to enhance the effects of hair transplants and topical medications.

Platelet rich plasma promotes hair growth by inducing the growth of new blood vessels to supply nutrients that nourish the follicles, it also prolongs the growth phase, stimulates hair follicle stem cells, and decreases inflammation and improves overall hair regrowth. Studies report that it increases the number of hair follicles and the percentage of hair thickness.

A series of treatments may be necessary to regrown hair. It may take up to six months to see full results. There is no downtime. However, a total loss of hair on the top and back of the head may be irreversible. The key to saving your hair is early treatment. After the series of treatment, maintenance injections every few years can maintain the results.

The healing and regenerative effects are available for skin rejuvenation, scar revision, alopecia, and pigmentary disorders. It may be combined with microneedling or used in combination with fractional laser resurfacing for facial rejuvenation and to treat acne scars. It is also used to regrow hair.
